このBarazaではRound Squareの目標であるIDEALS(Internationalism,Democracy,Environmentalism,Adventure,Leadership,Service)や今回のテーマ"The New Africa"についてディスカッションをしました。もちろん全て英語ですが、生徒たちは自分たちなりの意見を発信することが出来たようです。
I safely finished my exchange program in Australia. This past month feels like it's been both long and short. This was a very fulfilling experience where I was able to make many friends and go through new experiences that was completely different from my normal life. My friends were really kind and really helped me with a lot of things. I think I grew not only in my English skills but also as a human being. On the last night, we went to the mall with my mates in the unit and bought souvenirs. When we got back to dormitory, we talked about a lot of things that had happened in the past month until late at night. Even though the day of my departure was early in the morning, my friend got up early to say their last goodbyes. I felt very sad when I thought that I might not be able to see them for almost forever. This experience will forever be my treasure and I will cherish it forever.
The school had a long weekend which was from Friday to Monday. Dormitory was closed for this long weekend, so I stayed at my friend's house with another friend. The house where I stayed was in a very rural area, and it was an hour and a half drive from school. There were many farms, and the scenery was like the opposite of Tokyo. Animals such as cows and horses could be seen from the house. We played games, rode to town by bike, and made dinner every night. On the first night, we had BBQ. The second night, two of my friends said that one of their favorite Japanese food is Katsu curry, so we decided to make it together. In the supermarket in the town, there was an international corner, where they had Japanese curry powder, bread crumbs, and rice, so we made it using them. We felt that the Katsu wasn't crunchy enough, but overall, it was very delicious. On the third night, since one of my friends was Indonesian, three of us decided to make Nasi Goreng with the leftover rice from the day before. Unfortunately we ran out of some important seasonings while cooking it, so it felt a little like fried rice, but it was still very delicious. On the 4th night, we went back to dormitory, ate pizza, and we slept early for school.
It's been my 4th week in Australia. There was a sports festival this Thursday. It was held in the field under the school property. It was a competition between the 4 teams where the students were divided. The students were cheering for their team by painting the color of the team on their faces and dressing up. The events were 100m running, long jump, relay, etc. As a result, Knights (blue) came in 4th place, Goldsmith (yellow) came in 3rd place, Wilson (green) came in 2nd place, and Redding (red) came in 1st place. A hamburger truck came, and apples, muffins and juice were available to the students. The field was very large and the weather was very nice, so my friends and I lied down in the sun and spend a relaxing time.
My third week in Australia had finished. I took a test in English class last week. This week, I took a test in chemistry and HASS. Chemistry was difficult because all the phenomenons and the names of the elements were in English. HASS test wasn't too hard compared to the Chemistry test, since you only had to explain the article and the picture shown on the test. On Wednesday, I went to watch a school play, Shrek. It was very high quality and didn't feel like it was a school play. All the students in the play were both very good at acting and singing. Including the breaks, the whole thing went on for 3 hours. Students in elementary all the way to high school, even teachers were in the play. I personally liked the character Donkey the most. The student who played it had so much energy and enthusiasm, which really represented the character well, to the point. It felt like the character actually came out.
My second week in Australia had finished. I think I've gotten used to my classes at school. I took a 45minute test in English class with the other students. In the test, I had to analyze a sport poster and write like an essay. Initially, I thought it wasn't that hard since I just had to write down things I noticed in the poster. However, it was actually quite difficult to connect all of my ideas together and to actually make sense. On Thursday, there was a relay competition between the 4 teams at BCGS. In BCGS, students are divided into 4 different teams, just like Harry Potter. In the end, the green team Wilson, won the boys relay and the yellow team Goldsmith, won the girls relay. In the weekend, we went to town, played billiard, ping pong, and volleyball. It was my first time playing billiard, so my friend taught me how to play it. I gradually got better at it as I was playing.
The second week of school in Australia started. On the weekends, I and my friends at a dorm ate dinner at KFC and went to play bowling. I think I got pretty used to the school life here. Unlike schools in Japan, on days when there is PE, students spends all day wearing sport uniforms. We played golf today at PE. We were going to play golf out in the fields, but due to the heavy rain in the morning, we played a easy version of it inside. In HASS, (Humanities and Social Studies) we are learning about the civil rights movement and the discrimination against black people.
Yesterday was the last day of my first week of school. Although it's only been a week, I feel that I'm starting to get used to the school's system and classes. I also have started to get much more involved in everyone's conversations. Recently, my friends are interested in Japanese so I've been teaching them some Japanese. One of my friends even has a table with all of the Japanese words that he had learned from me. I have learned a lot of new English words from my friends, too. Thursday was a special day called NAIDOC, which was a day to celebrate the aboriginals. We got to experience aboriginal's traditional dances and even feel the difference between male and female kangaroo's fur. On my birthday, which was Friday, my friends at a dorm surprised me with a birthday cake! I was really happy and surprised, but most of all, I was touched by the kindness of my friends.
The school has officially started after my first weekend at a dorm. We got time to relax and watched movies at the cinema. There aren't many people in classes and instead of teachers coming to the classroom, you go to the teachers' classrooms. The classes I took were math, history, P.E., and engineering. In engineering, I got to experience molding metal.
I also joined the volleyball club's practice. The general atmosphere was really fun and I enjoyed it. I gave my friends at the dorm Japanese snack and fortunately they really liked them. I think I'm starting to get used to the new environment and life style.
Today I went to school feeling both anxious and excited. After Ms. Elliott gave me a tour of the school, I ate lunch with my dorm mates and actually took classes in the afternoon. Everyone was expressing their thoughts and opinions whenever they wanted. I also did a spear throwing kind of sport which was something you won't usually get to experience in Japan. My friends at the unit were very kind and friendly.
